Sumter Street cuts right through the heart of campus. From Pendleton Street (at the old War Memorial Bldg. and Cornell Arms) down to Blossom Street and on through the South Campus area all the way to Heyward Street just west of the new Academic Learning Center. No way you can get away from Sumter Street or Blossom Street if you're walking or driving around the USC campus.

From the top of the hill on Blossom Street (between McBryde Quad and the Freshman Honors Dorm - site of the former 'Honeycombs') you can see very clearly Williams-Brice Stadium in the distance - as the bird flies, it's actually only about 1 and 1/2 miles from that point).

Now, cast your eyes down a bit to street level and you'll see the problem - TELEPHONE POLES!!! Yikes! What seems like THOUSANDS of those damn creosoted telephone poles!!! An otherwise nice (and getting nicer) collegiate landscape marred by those nasty-looking brownish objects that seem to rise so obtrusively out of the ground. Actually, the view from the opposite hilltop (Sumter at Whaley Streets) is even worse, imo.

Does anyone know if the Sumter St. streetscaping project will eliminate those telephone poles? Please, someone, offer us campus freaks a smattering of hope!

Last time I looked the intersection of Blossom and Sumter was the poster child for uglyness.  They had just put up new buildings at two of the corners and they had failed to clean up the utility wires et al.  Maybe I do not know how these things are done but it seem a perfect opportunity to clean up the intersection was missed.

I gues they could be waiting to do it all at once.  Clean up the intersection and South Sumter.  It could be somethig beautiful.  Is there a streetscaping project that has been announced and funded???
